10 tips to avoid drowning this summer

In this news we share a decalogue of recommendations to avoid drowning this summer. It is essential to adopt preventive measures to enjoy a day that includes water activities. Keep reading below to avoid these types of dangers!

With the arrival of summer, high temperatures encourage us to seek relief in the water and enjoy relaxing moments. Both children and adults long to immerse themselves in beaches, pools and other aquatic environments to disconnect and have fun. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that we must take precautions to ensure the protection of everyone who enjoys these water activities.

The National Drowning Report (INA), prepared by the Royal Spanish Rescue and First Aid Federation, reveals that the first seven months of 2023 have recorded the highest number of deaths due to unintentional drowning in Spanish aquatic spaces in the last five years. Thus, until July 31 of this year, they have lost 249 vidas in aquatic environments in our country, of which 79 occurred in June.

The most affected autonomous communities have been Andalucía, followed by Cataluña, the Comunidad Valenciana and the Canary Islands.

With the aim of preventing drownings and guaranteeing the safety of citizens during this summer, the UNIVERSAE Defense, Security and Emergencies Unit ofrece un decálogo de consejos para evitar este tipo de situaciones:

  • – In natural environments such as rivers and lakes, be sure to know local conditions such as currents and depth.
  • – Choose to bathe safe places and supervised by lifeguards.
  • – Constantly monitor the minors while in or playing near water. It is vital that the responsible adults are in alert at all times.
  • – Use a lifejacket if you don't know how to swim or you don't do it correctly. Avoid inflatable floats.
  • - Respect the meaning of the flags on beaches and never swim alone in remote or little-traveled places. It is always better to enjoy the water in company from friends or family, so that, in case of emergency, someone can provide assistance.
  • - Avoid alcohol consumption before bathing, as it can reduce your ability to react to danger.
  • – Avoid bathing and/or swimming at night, since it represents a high risk as it is not visible to others. Likewise, avoid swimming near docks, boats or other structures that may present dangers.
  • – Be careful when throw you on your head from high altitudes and do not do it in shallow waters.
  • – Get out of the water if you feel tired or cold. It is important to check the temperature and wait two hours after eating.
  • – Stay calm if you witness a dangerous situation in the water and immediately request help from lifeguards or emergency services. Acting calmly and quickly can save lives.

Sergio Gil, director of the Defense, Security and Emergencies Unit of Universae highlights that “being aware of the worrying situation of drownings and injuries in aquatic spaces, we seek to raise awareness about the importance of adopting responsible behavior in the water and thus, together, guarantee unforgettable moments without risks. Prevention is key."

From the management of the Defense, Security and Emergencies Unit of UNIVERSAE they are focused on protecting the lives of those who enjoy this type of activities to be able to enjoy the summer in the water safely.
